The Heart String . Org

The HeartStrings Suzuki Violin studio, support for parents and string students from violinist Lisa Miles of Juneau, Alaska

Our mission:
is to bring about increased awareness of the great potential and talent that is innate within every child at birth, and to encourage the support and growth of these talents.  Lisa Miles and a few HeartStrings Marine Park concert participantsAs teachers and parents, through the study of music, we enrich children's characters and ability to learn. We seek to inspire our children's ability to share their musical and human talents with the world.

We encourage a nurturing environment for all children. We are a part of a greater Suzuki community cultivating beautiful tone and hearts around the world. We recognize that all children can learn to play and/or appreciate beautiful music. Our higher goal is to cultivate better citizens as a whole. To accomplish this goal, we utilize the Suzuki Philosophy and additional quality resources. We encourage communication and cooperation amongst organizations, communities, and individuals, insuring the success of each and every one of our children.

Our children are the future;
the greater the love we give,
the greater our world.

What we do:
We take to heart the statement Shinichi Suzuki made when he said,
"I do not wish to create a sea of virtuosos, but better citizens as a whole."

Lisa Miles and students in their first service concertThe Juneau, Alaska students have been known to play for small howling audiences at the Humane Society, to very large audiences at Marine Park where they greet some of the 300,000+  tourists arriving by cruise ships. Every year they offer a Valentine's concert at local senior homes and facilities.  They have also networked with other organizations such as ESA to support fundraising efforts for the Boys & Girls Club and St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

  HeartStrings combine the cultivation of musicianship with service.

Most recently, the students created a scholarship for youth with a dream to play music, but who may lack the necessary funds to pursue their music education goals. Local businesses and individuals pledged towards the children's practice minutes a contribution to the fund. The
Crescendo Fund ScholarshipLisa Miles and HeartStrings
is a dedicated fund, stewarded by Juneau Arts & Humanities Council. During the 2005 - 2006 school year, seven children with a dream and a will to succeed, were given the financial means to do so!
Through opportunities like this, and leadership and teamwork mentorship,
HeartStrings students have learned that "Little Children Can Make a BIG Difference!"

HeartStrings also work towards high levels of musical excellence, participating in local symphonies and ensembles with students much older than them. Students can be found traveling from Juneau, a community with no roads in or out, to distant locations. In Anchorage, Fairbanks, Sitka AK, Seattle WA, Portland, Eugene OR, San Francisco, and Chicago, students play and learn from world-renowned teachers, and attend
summer arts institutes.  Students use every resource possible for growth.
